Sunapee, N.H. — The Sunapee Historical Society will host its spring program—Notable Women of Sunapee—on Wednesday evening, April 30, at 7 p.m. at the Lake Sunapee United Methodist Church, Lower Main Street at Route 11, Sunapee. Everyone is welcome at this free event; refreshments will be served.
Ron Garceau will show photos and lead a discussion recalling the contributions of several memorable women from Sunapee’s past. Come and learn or share your memories. Garceau is well-known around the Sunapee area as the publisher of SooNipi Magazine and past president of the Sunapee Historical Society.
The spring program will be a precursor for a homemaker’s exhibit at the Sunapee Historical Society Museum, 74 Main Street, Sunapee Harbor, and a summer program on women’s organizations.
Other summer programs will be about the Woodbine Cottage and the wooden launches that used to frequent Lake Sunapee.
The museum will reopen (weekends only, 1-4 p.m., through June) on May 24.

Sunapee, N.H. — Sunapee Green-Up Day is coming up. Volunteers are needed for this annual road-side clean up set for Saturday, May 3, 2014, from 9 a.m. to noon. The raindate is Sunday, May 4.
Green-Up Day is a tradition in town. Family and friends turn out and pick up roadside litter town wide. The volunteers then gather at noon at Sunapee Harbor for a picnic that is sponsored by local businesses and organizations.
Volunteer forms are available at Abbott Library and the Sunapee Town Office building, Edgemont Road, and on the event website.
Participants are asked to bring their completed form to the sign-in at the Safety Services Building, 9 Sargent Road, at 9 a.m. on the morning of the event to get a clean up area assignment. Newport, N.H. — The Richards Free Library, 58 N. Main Street, Newport, is celebrating National Poetry Month on April 24 at 7 p.m.. Bring your favorite poem to read or just come to listen. Everyone is invited. Refreshments will be provided.
At the Richards Free Library on April 28 (at 3:30 p.m.), Dr. Robert Scott will read and talk about his new book for children, Horatio’s Hometown Hero. The book was written in conjunction with Ambassador Joseph and Augusta Petrone as part of the Inspire Future New Hampshire Heroes program. Admission is free.
The book tells a simple story: To be a hero you do not have to be rich, powerful or beautiful, all you need is a giving heart that cares and shares with others. “Yes, we all can become a hero,” is the book’s motto.

Upper Valley, N.H. — The Upper Valley Land Trust and Hulbert Outdoor Center are sponsoring an Upper Valley Naturalist Training from April 23-May 17, 2013.
The Upper Valley Naturalist Training program is an in-depth introduction to the ecosystems and wildlife found in the Upper Valley region of Vermont and New Hampshire.
The training is designed to be accessible for the beginning naturalist, but also of interest to more seasoned naturalists, particularly those looking for a way to share their knowledge with the larger community.
The training will include four Wednesday evening classroom presentations and four Saturday field sessions.
Topics will be presented by local experts and include geology, plant communities, wetland ecology, birds, interpretive techniques and more. Space is limited, so interested participants should register now.
