Sunapee’s 1st official Annual GreenUp Day held last Saturday was an overwhelming success. Lots of residents participated in the coordinated town-wide effort May 2. Over 175 volunteers including many young people pitched in to pick up roadside litter and trash. And many contributed in other ways. The clean up  was coordinated by the town highway department and volunteers. The group also launched a website to promote the GreenUp and related information on an on-going basis.

According to Sunapee Road Agent Tony Bergeron (as reported in the selectmen draft minutes for May 4, 2009), the clean up was “very successful” and “all town roads were done and 80% of the state roads.” Clear bags were used for litter that could be recycled and blue bags for regular trash.

The recyclable items were to be sorted at the Transfer Station on Thursday by inmates from the Sullivan County House of Correction. And when a small section of Route 11 that was over-looked during the clean up, volunteers returned last week to complete the work.

The GreenUp included a picnic for volunteers that was made possible by in-kind contributions including those from two local businesses, Pizza Chef and the Pizza Market.

According to Co-Chair Rhonda Gurney, the committee will post photos from the event on the Sunapee GreenUp website. And, yes, plans for next year’s event are underway. By the way, it’s never to early sign up to help.
