Terrariums made by Rhonda Gurney of Sunapee are part of New York artist Richard Saja’s exhibit at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, on display in the Kalkin House from May 17 to October 25.
A native of Claremont (NH), Gurney began creating terrariums as a child with her grandmother, who made them in the fall and often gave them as gifts. She fills them with exclusively local vegetation, including moss, fungi, mushrooms, partridge berries and princess pines.
Saja purchased one of Gurney’s living, miniature landscapes at the Woodstock Inn, took it back to New York and kept her card. A few month ago, she received a call from the artist requesting her participation in his exhibit. Five terrariums are on display in varying sizes.
Gurney sells her work under the name Zadwiga’s Designs, a nod to her grandmother’s Polish name. She accepts local orders and will be selling her terrariums at the farmers’ market in Sunapee this summer. Inquiries may be sent to gurney1@myfairpoint.net.
