The Sunapee board of selectmen voted at Monday’s meeting to enroll the town in the CodeRED emergency phone messaging system. This will allow emergency personnel to record a message for distribution to the community via a public list and those that sign up for the service. The notification system would only be used in an emergency, such as an ice storm, explained Town Manager Donna Nashawaty, as reported in the selectmen’s May 4, 2009 draft minutes.
The cost of servicing the area towns of New London, Newbury, Sutton Springfield, Wilmot and Sunapee is $8,500 annually. This year the cost for Sunapee is $1,050, which will be split by the town and the water and sewer department. Having the emergency notification system is a priority for New London, Nashawaty said. New London agreed to contribute $5,000.
New London has already posted a link on its town website for New Londoners to sign up.
Provided by Emergency Communications Network, Inc., CodeRED is a high volume and high speed communication service for “mass emergency notification.” It uses an internet mapping tool, client call lists and an interactive voice response line, according to the company website.
The system is geographically based. Those that sign up for emergency notification will be asked to give their street address, which helps determine the phone numbers to call based on the emergency at hand.
“The CodeRED system gives Town emergency officials the ability to deliver pre-recorded emergency telephone notification/information messages to the entire town or to targeted areas at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour,” according to New London Town Administrator Jessie Levine.
