Enjoy NH Maple Weekend March 28 and 29

SunapeeNews.com celebrates NH Maple Weekend with info and a new banner by Paul Howe Photography.

This weekend, over 65 sugar houses across New Hampshire, including many in the Lake Sunapee region, will be offering free samples and tours. March 28 and 29 is NH Maple Weekend. Gov. John Lynch is urging citizens to recognize the economic and cultural importance of maple producers.

A list of participating sugar houses is posted on the NH Maple Producers Association website. Those who do not have access to the internet, may call the Maple Hotline at 603-225-3757.

In Sunapee, two sugar houses will welcome visitors, Saturday and Sunday:

  • Harding Hill Farm: Tyler & Van Webb, 131 Rte.103 (1/2 mi. E. of Jct. Rte 11 & 103), Sunapee. Phone 603-863-5979. Hours: Sat. 9-5, Sun. 10-5. Tours of sugar house & orchard.
  • Leavitt Family Maple: William Leavitt. 546 North Rd., Sunapee. Phone 603-763-5323. Hours: Sat. & Sun. 10-4. Visit the sugar house and enjoy donuts, coffee, vanilla ice cream & maple syrup.

Last year’s maple season was one of the best in over half a century for producers in the southern half of the state, which more than balanced out the mediocre to poor season northern producers experienced, according to the NH Maple Producers. Statewide production was over 85,000 gallons.

Ideal conditions for good sap runs are nighttime temperatures in the 20s and daytime temperatures in the low to mid 40s, with plenty of sunshine and little or no wind.
